Ask any queer person what Dolly Parton meant to them and watch their whole face change. You either felt it or you didn't, and most of us felt it.

She was in our corner for decades. She sang that everyone belonged back in 1991. She wrote "Travelin' Thru" for a trans story. She stood behind marriage equality in 2009, years before the law caught up. When a woman was told to turn her marriage equality shirt inside out at Dollywood, Dolly apologized publicly and made it clear where she stood. She spoke up against the anti-trans bathroom law. None of that was free. She did it anyway, and she never asked us to thank her for it.

She said it best herself: find out who you are and do it on purpose. She lived that out loud, and she made room for the rest of us to do the same.

Here's what we hope you take from her. You don't need a stage to do what she did. You just have to be the person who says you belong here before anybody else says it.
