The Open

Hi, Queens. Tom and I hope you survived Halloween weekend, found both shoes, and gave back the borrowed wig with an apology and a thank-you text. Rest up. Thanksgiving is coming, and so is your aunt asking, very loudly over the green beans, how a throuple decides who carves.

Apparently a lot of you made it to the polls, too. Look at you, out here being civically engaged and still making brunch. Here’s what California decided.

Governor: Xavier Becerra won with 64% of the vote. He’s a Sacramento native, and he gave his victory speech at Drake’s: The Barn in West Sac. The Barn has had Rocky Horror and a governor-elect in the same month, and somehow that’s not the strangest booking in West Sac history.

The firsts: Becerra is California’s first Latino governor since 1875 and the first Latino ever elected to the job. A 151-year wait between firsts is a long time, even by DMV standards.

The counting isn’t done, and results won’t be certified until December 11. Pace yourself, and hydrate. Whatever you think of the results, you showed up, and that’s the most Sac Queens thing you could have done.

Now, what you’re really here for. Let’s get into the events.

This Week in Sac Queens

Person of the Week: Governor-Elect Xavier Becerra

Sacramento finally has a hometown kid headed for the governor’s office. On Tuesday, Becerra, who grew up in a working-class family in Sacramento, beat Steve Hilton to become the first Latino elected governor of California. The last Latino to hold the office got there in 1875. It took 151 years and about five million votes. Sacramento traffic has done similar things to people.

His résumé reads like a man who couldn’t commit to one government job, so he took all of them: Congress, California attorney general and U.S. health secretary. That’s more government jobs than most of us have had situationships, and he’s still on speaking terms with all of them.

He’s sworn in come January. If you spot him on K Street before then, say congratulations. After that, he comes with security, and you’ll have to settle for a wave.

Know someone who deserves this spot? The drag queen who outraised the gala, the bartender who knows your order and your business, the volunteer who has stacked chairs at every event since 2009. Reply with a name and a sentence about why. Self-nominations are allowed and we will not tell anyone.

Autumn flights are here

Cool air, colorful leaves or a whole new city skyline: There's still time to book your fall escape with Alaska Airlines. Watch the aspens turn golden in Denver, catch a set on Broadway in Nashville, or trade sweaters for sunshine in Palm Springs. However you picture autumn, we fly there.

Fall is the perfect season for a quick reset. Maybe you're craving crisp hikes through New England, a weekend of orchards in the Pacific Northwest, or a food crawl through a city you've never explored. Whatever your version of autumn takes you, we've got a flight to get you there. Fly nonstop or connect to hundreds of destinations nationwide.

Flights start at great prices, so taking a little fall break won't break your budget.

Subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply.

Queer Owned Business of the Week: Happy Home Pest Prevention

Most pest control ads look the same: a guy in a jumpsuit, a cartoon cockroach, and a vague sense that something in your kitchen is about to be gassed. Happy Home Pest Prevention takes a different approach. Abby Little founded the company in 2024 after 15 years in Integrated Pest Management and more than 20 years in customer service. She’s the owner and the hands-on operator, so the person who answers the phone may well be the one checking your crawl space. Happy Home is an openly trans-woman-owned pest control company, and as far as anyone can tell, the only one in the country. The industry has been around for about a century, so it took its time.

Abby’s methods are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and safe for kids and pets, which is good news for anyone whose dog licks the baseboards. Her services cover ants, spiders, termite inspections and treatments, and flea and tick cycles for the yard and the house. She also handles rodent exclusion, which means sealing up the gaps mice use to get in. It’s basically eviction for rodents, but without the court date. Her approach is prevention first, so she explains what’s getting in and why instead of spraying everything and sending you a bill. Every visit starts with a free home evaluation, which makes it the only free thing that will ever involve your attic.

When she isn’t evicting rodents, Abby serves on the board of the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Somehow she has time for meetings and termites. We don’t fully understand it either.

Winter is when the ants decide your pantry looks cozy and the mice start making holiday plans in your walls. Call Abby before your houseguests do. Tell her Sac Queens sent you.

Serving Sacramento and Placer County / (916) 330-8050 / Mon–Fri, 8 AM to 5 PM, Saturdays by appointment. https://www.happyhomepestprevention.com/

The Close

Now, for anyone wondering how to keep this thing running, there are a few ways:

  • Tell us who you are. The two-minute form tells us what you actually want more of, and we read every answer. Fill it in here.

  • Hit reply. Events we missed, corrections, or a nomination for Person of the Week or Queer Owned Business of the Week. Two of this week's listings came in from a reader who just wrote to tell us.

  • Come find each other. The community is where you post the question nobody has answered yet, like whether this city has a gay mahjong group. Join the community.

  • Become a Sugar Daddy. Half of every dollar goes to the holiday party and the other half keeps the website and the emails running, because the servers do not accept compliments as payment. Apply to become our Sugar Daddy.

  • Book the Featured Slot. Got a business, an event or a cause that belongs in front of 573 Sac Queens who actually open their email? Advertise with Sac Queens.

One more thing. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center runs more support groups, youth groups and classes every week than we could list without burying everything else, so we have stopped trying. Their calendar is the place to browse all of it. See what the Center has on.

See you next Thursday.
