The Open

On April 27th of this year, Thomas and I almost made a horrible mistake. We almost named this newsletter…

Yes, that’s the actual cover page of the slide deck (aka PowerPoint presentation) that kicked off the ideation and planning for the newsletter you reading right now. We had a brief infatuation with the name, but (thankfully) it didn’t last very long.

What were some of the other ideas? Delta Queens, Homo on the Range, Queercento, Twinkle Town, Farm to Fabulous, and Sacrament-HO.

If you’ve ever studied innovation, you’ll probably recognize this convergence-divergence diagram.

Come up with a bunch of ideas. Some good. Some okay. Some really bad (hi, Sacrament-HO). Then narrow down the list and make a decision on the best one. It was through this process that we eventually landed on Sac Queens.

Even though the name drastically changed, we’ve mostly stuck to our original plan for the newsletter with a few small experiments here and there.

The numbers, for those who like numbers. Today, there are 556 active subscribers, and on avg 73% of you open the email every week. In Beehiiv (the email platform we use) rankings, that puts is solidly in the top 5-10% of all newsletters. In the last 30 days, 74 new Sac Queens joined, mostly because you shared it. We did not pay for that. Unless you count the referral merch. In which case, Thomas did in fact pay for that. But you’re worth it.

All of that is to say, thanks for being a subscriber! We hope you find something fun to do this weekend. And as always, if you have any feedback, just hit reply!

Person of the Week: Jayy Wonder

Jayy came to Sacramento from Arizona in 2013, already holding a 2012 UCA All-American Award for the best cheerleaders in the country. That explains a lot. Jayy has spent years making Sacramento more visible, louder and better organized than it had any intention of being. Leaving Arizona for Sacramento is technically moving somewhere cooler. Only technically.

In 2017 they started volunteering in the leather and LGBTQIA+ communities, and the community did what it always does with someone competent: it gave them every job nobody else wanted. Secretary of QLAS. Secretary of the United Courts of CGNIE. Pup Manager for CLAW Cleveland and CLAW LA, which involves exactly the amount of herding you’re picturing. Co-Producer of Leather Pride Sacramento in 2024 and 2025. Most people would quit after the second set of meeting minutes. Jayy took the minutes, then approved them.

The titles caught up: a QLAS Presidential Award, Grand Marshal of Sac Pride 2024, runner-up for Mr. Bolt Leather, and the very first MX Queer Sacramento. Being first means nobody can say you did it worse than the last one, a strategy we respect. Nonbinary, trans, leather, kinky and openly HIV-positive, they’ve made every one of those easier to say out loud. Over 100 events in, if a queer event in this town starts on time and everyone feels welcome, look for Jayy by the door, judging your harness. Lovingly. Mostly.

Queer Owned Business of the Week: Sac Tech Buddies

You met Alan-Michael Danner last week as our Person of the Week and Mr. October. Now meet the business that keeps him busy when he isn’t hanging on your wall. Sac Tech Buddies is proof that a man can look good in leather and still fix your Bluetooth.

The company started in home automation, which means it makes your house smarter than your ex. The lights dim on cue, the thermostat cools the place before you walk in, and you can check the front door lock from the bar. His team also installs security cameras for the nosy, whole-house audio for anyone who needs Robyn in every room, and voice control, which may be the most obedient thing in your life. Last year the work outgrew smart homes, so the business got a new name, and now the Buddies handle tech support and training of nearly every kind. If your printer has more moods than a Scorpio, this is who you call.

Most tech companies give you a chatbot and a 45-minute hold playlist. Sac Tech Buddies gives you a man who spent two years teaching seniors the difference between a browser and the internet without once losing his patience. Your router doesn’t stand a chance.

Every queer friend group has one person who gets called whenever the Wi-Fi drops, and they deserve to retire. Book a consultation, tell them Sac Queens sent you, and let your friend go back to being invited for their personality. Hopefully they have one.

  • Use your referral link. It lets us say thank you properly with Sac Queens swag. Gratitude is nice, and free merch is nicer.

  • Become a Sugar Daddy. Half of every dollar goes to the holiday party. The other half keeps the website and emails running, because the servers, sadly, do not accept compliments as payment. Apply to become our Sugar Daddy.

  • Book the featured slot . Got a business, an event, or a cause that belongs in front of 556 Sac Queens who actually open their email? Advertise with Sac Queens.

See you next Thursday.
