The Open

Last weekend, Tom and I went to Blazin’ Saddles to see Diplo. On paper, this made no sense. A show that put country music and dance music on the same stage on purpose? We expected to stand politely near the back and leave early. Instead, we sang along to classic hits with Wuki and danced to country with Diplo, and we stayed until the very end. Nobody was more surprised than we were. The boots did their job.

The lesson: don’t judge a lineup by its genre. Denzel Washington put it best at Penn’s 2011 commencement, borrowing a line from his wife: “To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.” He meant careers and dreams. I mean two sac queens in borrowed cowboy boots yelling country lyrics they learned in real time. Denzel would understand.

In last week’s poll, What Brings You Back?, 43 of you voted, and 65% picked “Here for it all”: the drag, the bars, the food, the whole calendar. The surprise was classes within the community, which came in second with 12%, so apparently you want to learn something between brunch and the bar. That’s cool. I guess maybe we’ll have to host our own class one day. Or find more to add to the newsletter.

This week, look at the calendar below and pick one thing you would normally scroll right past. A run club, a trivia night, a lip-sync show where comics try drag and queens try stand-up. Worst case, you get a story out of it. Best case, you find a new favorite thing. If you need permission, consider it granted.

Before we get to the events, I owe a huge thank you to Raul at Roc & Sol who has been our main sponsor two weeks running. Go see BeBe Sweetbriar at Roc & Sol on Halloween and grab that 💰 for best costume!

Now, what you’re really here for. Let’s get into the events.

Person of the Week: Alexandra Orzeck

Tom here. In March 2024, I met Alexandra Orzeck at a startup weekend at Sac State’s Carlsen Center. She’d decided to sign up the day before, and she showed up with an idea called Organized Legacy: an app that keeps a loved one’s logins, passwords and important info in one place, so if they pass unexpectedly, the family isn’t left scrambling to get their house in order. Most people don’t have a will, let alone a fancy setup. She pitched it Friday night, a few of us liked it so much we joined her team, and by Sunday we were holding a giant check for first place. I also left with a new friend.

Alexandra is smart, warm and a lot of fun, the kind of person who can explain something complicated without ever making you feel behind. She puts that to work in two ways: she runs Mindful Financial, her own firm that helps growing businesses become more profitable, and she’s an advisor with the Sacramento Valley SBDC, helping small businesses across the region with their financial planning. On Saturdays, you might catch her playing kickball with OutLoud Sports. Say hi after the game and ask her about Cleo Abrams on YouTube, or the best business idea she’s heard lately. You’ll leave with a new favorite channel and probably a better plan.

Fall’s best destinations are waiting

Mountain air, city lights or somewhere new? There's still time to make your fall plans take flight with Alaska Airlines. With hundreds of destinations, you can celebrate autumn to the fullest. See the fall foliage in Boston, sip cider in Seattle, or swap your flannel for a swimsuit and head to Hawai‘i.

With nonstop routes to over 100 cities across North America and beyond, getting to your fall destination is easier than ever. Whether you're chasing changing leaves or year-round sunshine, Alaska’s growing network means more ways to reach where autumn is calling.

Fares at great prices, so it's easier than ever to say ‘yes’ to a getaway before the season's gone.

Subject to availability. Terms and conditions apply.

Queer Owned Business of the Week: Mindful Financial

You met Alexandra as person of the week. Here’s the business she built. Mindful Financial, which she founded, helps growing businesses turn their sales into real profit.

Picture a business that’s busy and bringing in money, but somehow there’s never enough left at the end of the month. The owner is putting out every fire, the team isn’t sure what matters most, and cash is hard to predict. Mindful Financial finds where the money is slipping away, helps set clear goals and track whether the business is hitting them, and builds simple systems so it can run without the owner doing everything. Then Alexandra stays and works alongside the team instead of handing over a report and disappearing.

If you run a small business that’s growing, you can work with Alexandra for free through the Sacramento Valley SBDC. If you want more hands-on help, Mindful Financial starts with a free 30-minute call, and its site has a free three-minute Profit Health Score to see where your business stands.

Now, for anyone wondering how to keep this thing running, there are a few ways:

  • Tell us who you are. The two-minute form tells us what you actually want more of, and we read every answer. Fill it in here.

  • Hit reply. Events we missed, corrections, or a nomination for Person of the Week or Queer Owned Business of the Week. Readers found us three listings this month.

  • Come find each other. The community is where you post the question nobody has answered yet, like whether this city has a gay Mahjong group. Join the community.

  • Become a Sugar Daddy. Half of every dollar goes to the holiday party and the other half keeps the website and the emails running, because the servers do not accept compliments as payment. Apply to become our Sugar Daddy.

  • Book the Featured Slot. Got a business, an event or a cause that belongs in front of 561 Sac Queens who actually open their email? Advertise with Sac Queens.

See you next Thursday.
