A Sacramento original, henny. In 1970, a baby-faced undergrad at Sac State decided this town needed its first openly LGBTQ organization, and so the Society for Homosexual Freedom was born. CSUS clutched its pearls and refused the charter. George and company took them to court — and won, in Superior Court, on Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly. The administration learned a valuable lesson about telling a determined queer person no.

He did not go away quietly. In 1974 he became California's first full-time LGBTQ rights legislative advocate at the State Legislature, where he pushed through the Willie Brown Consenting Adult Law, a bill that had been languishing since 1969, finally decriminalizing sex between consenting adults. In 1977 he took his talents to Washington for the historic National Gay Task Force–White House Conference, the first time presidential staff sat down with members of our community to actually listen. Someone had to be in the room first, and he was.

At 77, George is a retired Sacramento County employee and chair emeritus of the Marshall-New Era Neighborhood Association, because retirement is a suggestion, not a rule. He holds a Bachelor's in Political Science from CSUS and a Juris Doctorate from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, which explains a lot about the suing.

Paul Chambers has been working on cars for as long as he can remember. He spent high school hanging around a car lot, and the owners there were the first people he ever came out to. Cars and coming out have been tangled together for him ever since, which is more than most of us can say about our first job.

A few years ago he finally got the room to go all in on flipping, repairing and detailing, all three at once. He calls that combination the trifecta. He also calls it his kink, and we see no reason to argue.

That became Boy Next Door Detailing, a name picked to feel approachable, familiar and a little playful. Think the cute neighbor who happens to know his way around a brake job, suspension work and paint correction, the only kind of neighbor worth borrowing a cup of sugar from.

Paul handles brakes, tune-ups, suspension, light body repair and full premium detailing. The real point is a shop where nobody gets talked down to or taken for a ride, so he makes a point of welcoming single moms and the LGBTQ+ community. Prices stay reasonable because he actually loves the work.

As he puts it, every car he finishes is a reflection of him. Sometimes literally.
